Over the past year or so, I’ve been playing a lot of guitar again. I’ve been especially interested in working with open tunings, which have opened up a fat new toolbox of techniques — not to mention the lion’s share of the Keith Richards song catalog. Coming back into standard tuning after playing for a while in one of the alternate configurations, I find I have a fresher, more open-minded approach. Now, if I could learn to play from the top of the guitar neck rather than with the “regular” underhand grip, that would be something. Check out this outstanding guitarist from Botswana, below. And then check out Kaki King, who plays with a similar style, while adding her own Michael Hedges-inspired twist. I like them both, but the Botswana playing for me has a lot more soul. Enjoy.
