Today, another article in the New York Times remarkable series on the U.S. water supply.
Charles Duhigg writes: “The 35-year-old federal law regulating tap water is so out of date that the water Americans drink can pose what scientists say are serious health risks — and still be legal.
Only 91 contaminants are regulated by the Safe Drinking Water Act, … [but] not one chemical has been added to the list of those regulated by the Safe Drinking Water Act since 2000.”
Nine years, no action. For a long time, we’ve taken a clean public water supply for granted. The technology to monitor and remediate many of the most dangerous pollutants are available; what we need now is strong, serious regulation, and major investment in updating infrastructure. Being a “developed nation” is one thing, maintaining that status is another. Are we committed as a country to that, harder job?
