From a nice San Jose Mercury News story on DIYbio session at the fourth annual Maker Faire:
“At their booth, the DIYbio crowd performed a simple but elegant DNA project: 1) Spit in a cup. 2) Add a drop of soap, 3.) Swirl in a pinch of salt and 4) Pour in rubbing alcohol — or Barcardi rum, for grown-ups. Voilà! A long string of tinsel-like stuff appeared: DNA.”
The story goes on to discuss trends responsible for DIYbio’s supposedly rising popularity: “Materials are cheaper and more accessible than ever. Anyone can order jellyfish DNA for a green fluorescent protein from a biological supply company. Used lab freezers, important to keep bacteria alive, can be bought off Craigslist.”

Does anyone have a copy of the San Jose Mercury News article on this? Their site seems to be broken. Thanks!
Sorry, this doesn’t seem to be an active link on their site anymore. If you can get access to a Lexis Nexis account, you’d be able to find it that way.
